Cactus Foreign Language Courses

Cactus logo St Giles has come together with Cactus to offer evening foreign language courses in French, German, Spanish and Italian.

St Giles and Cactus

St Giles is one of the largest and most successful international language training organisations. We are recognised worldwide for offering high quality language and teacher training courses at affordable prices. As testament to our success, every year more than 9000 students choose St Giles for their language learning needs.

Cactus Language is one of the leading providers of language travel worldwide, offering courses in over 25 languages, and in some 150 destinations.

Together, we have teamed up to offer a range of language courses in French, German, Spanish, Italian, Polish and Mandarin, at St Giles London Central and St Giles London Highgate .

Course Content

All of our courses are carefully structured and designed to cover a wide range of topic areas, grammatical structures and skills. A Cactus Foreign Language Course includes the following elements:

  • Developing and improving your spoken language to build on your confidence to communicate with native speakers.
  • Developing your listening and comprehension skills to improve understanding.
  • Learning and reviewing the grammatical structures of the language
  • Everyday language - language that you can use in real-life situations, both written and spoken.
  • Reading practice and comprehension testing.

The Teachers

All of our teaching staff are fully qualified and experienced foreign language trainers, with a specialised background in adult education.

Methodology

At St Giles, we understand that different students have different needs. The St Giles 'learner centred' approach to modern language teaching enables our trainers to meet your individual needs. Classes will take place in groups with a maximum of 12 students. Courses cover practice in all 4 skill areas: speaking, listening, reading and writing; however, you will find the focus of our Cactus Foreign Language Courses is on speaking and listening - the main requirements of today's modern language learner.

Course Materials

For all Cactus Foreign Language Courses you will use a text book, which forms the basis of your study, but which is supplemented by a variety of authentic listening and reading materials.

The Right Course for You

Cactus Foreign Language Courses are designed for those who require a general vocabulary and a basic grammatical foundation to improve their understanding and increase their confidence to communicate in everyday situations. The courses are offered at basic, elementary and intermediate levels. To help you decide which level is right for you, please use the following set of guidelines:

  1. Beginner:
You have very little or no knowledge of the language. Your vocabulary is limited to a few words, and you have not had any previous tuition.

  2. Elementary/false beginner:
You should be able to understand simple questions and statements, and survive in basic situations e.g. travel, accommodation, shopping, socialising. Your comprehension of the language is limited. You use mainly present tense, with some set phrases for the past.

  3. Lower intermediate:
You should be able to understand sentences and frequently-used expressions related to areas of immediate relevance (e.g. very basic personal and family information, shopping, local geography, employment). You should be comfortable with a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar and routine matters.

  4. Intermediate:
You can understand the general meaning in familiar, everyday situations and can hold a reasonable conversation. You have a good range of vocabulary for concrete topics. You can use a variety of tenses, but you make some mistakes in speaking and writing (GCSE level).

  5. Upper intermediate;
At this level you understand almost all spoken and written everyday language. You speak confidently, even in unfamiliar situations, and your writing is good (e.g. university degree level). A course will lead to a feeling of fluency and the use of 'native speaker' expressions.

  6. Advanced:
You should be confident speaking and writing about a range of topics, such as yourself, your environment and current affairs. At this level you study in greater depth and become proficient in all aspects of the language.
