TESOL, the field of teaching English to speakers of other languages, is a growth
industry.
A qualification in TESOL will open up opportunities to live and work in the UK and abroad and
meet people from many different backgrounds and cultures.
You will find teaching English can be challenging, rewarding and immensely enjoyable.
Founded in 1955, St Giles was one of the first organisations to offer training for
English language teachers in the UK and the Cambridge Certificate
was first introduced in the USA by St Giles in San Francisco.
TEFL Courses at St Giles
St Giles today provides intensive English language courses in seven centres in
England, the USA and Brazil. We also offer a wide variety of teacher training courses
for both native and non-native speakers, including:
Our teacher trainers are highly experienced and have trained teachers in the UK, the
USA, Australia and various European countries. All our teacher trainers are also practising teachers,
who have extensive and varied experience teaching English both in the UK and USA, and overseas.
The St Giles Educational Trust, a registered charity, was established in 1970.
The main purpose of the Trust
is to raise standards in the English Language Teaching (ELT) profession,
through its teacher training and language research programmes.
In addition to our wide range of teacher training programmes, the St Giles
Educational Trust oversees the running of the Central London ELT Library, a resource centre and
library open to all members of the ELT profession,
including our trainees. The centre offers a reference library, journals and periodicals
and multi-media facilities. A programme of visiting speakers is also organised through
the ELT Library.
The facilities and resources at all our centres are of a very high standard,
and the atmosphere is supportive and professional. Trainees have access to our onsite
ELT bookshops at St Giles Brighton and London Central, as well as to a wide range of
up-to-the-minute facilities including video, DVD, language laboratories,
computer laboratories, internet and email, and an attractive and friendly student
cafeteria at each centre.
Finally, taking advantage of our worldwide network, St Giles recruits experienced
and newly-trained teachers for its own centres and will provide successful candidates with
advice and help in finding jobs abroad and in developing their future career.
Working in ELT
The Cambridge CELTA and Trinity Cert. TESOL are introductory qualifications to the field
of English language teaching, accredited by the British Council and recognised by other schools as
professional certification. They are designed for those with little or no experience
of ELT. It is understood that any new teacher is going to continue to develop through
experience and the first few years are generally considered an 'apprenticeship' period
- although you are paid, of course!
Most graduates from the CELTA /Trinity Cert. TESOL aim to find work in another country, but many also
aim to use their qualification to find work in the field of further education.
It is possible to find work in the UK, especially around the
'tourist centres' of London, Brighton, Cambridge etc, particularly during the busy summer season.
Work all year round is less easy
to come by for new teachers, partly due to the seasonal element in language teaching.
After a few years' experience, usually in more than one context, teachers may be
interested in going further in their ELT development - undertaking a DELTA diploma or M.A.
course can often enhance career possibilities. Apart from teaching, opportunities in
ELT can be as diverse as its participants: writing materials, becoming involved in course
design, teacher training and so on. This is just the start!
